The Clinical Management course will combine theoretical sessions with practical activities aimed at applying concepts to real situations within the healthcare system. Teaching will alternate between lectures and flipped-classroom sessions, case analysis and discussion on the organisation and operation of health services, and workshops focused on interpreting indicators, data and management tools. Activities will include guided problem-solving and case analysis, supervised assignments, cooperative learning tasks, and simulated environments related to the planning and improvement of healthcare services. Students will be required to complete and submit assignments to the lecturer, as well as participate in activities carried out and/or presented in class, with the aim of fostering active participation, analytical skills, and decision-making in professional contexts.
The Clinical Management course will follow continuous assessment through:
- Case studies
- Final group project
- Theoretical exams
Ordinary Call
Part I: Practical Group Activities (40%)
Case studies (20% - Highly Important Academic Activity). Three case studies will be completed throughout the course, addressing topics such as service management, healthcare models, performance-based contracting and process redesign. Assessment will place particular emphasis on analytical ability, the proposed improvement plan, justification using indicators and data, and the quality of the presentation.
Final group project (20% - Highly Important Academic Activity). This consists of designing a proposal for improvement in a real or simulated healthcare setting. The project may address service planning, resource allocation, care coordination, patient quality and safety, or the implementation of value-based models. Active participation in presentations and discussions will be positively assessed.
Part II: Theory Assessment
Theoretical Exams (60% - Highly Important Academic Activities). Students will have two options for the distribution of the syllabus, which must be communicated before the Midterm:
Two Partial Theoretical Exams:
First Partial Exam (p1) (30%). Midterm exam of the syllabus covering block 1 to 6
Second Partial Exam (p2) (30%). At the end of the course, simultaneously with the final exams, covering the remaining syllabus.
A Single Final Theoretical Exam (F) (60%). At the end of the course covering the entire syllabus of the course.
To pass the course, students must obtain a mark of 5 or higher both in the group project component and in the theoretical assessment, and achieve a final overall grade of 5 or higher. If the student chooses the two-exam option and fails the first partial exam, they must take the final theoretical exam covering the entire syllabus; the first partial exam will not exempt content. If the student does not obtain a minimum grade of 5 in the above components or overall, the course will be considered failed and the student must take the second examination period. Failure to submit activities will result in a mark of 0.
Extraordinary Call
For the second call, the grades of the passed parts will be maintained. If the theoretical exams are failed, the points from the quiz-tests will not be considered in the second call. This second call will consist of an assessment where students will only present the failed part in the first call: 60% final theoretical exam on the knowledge of the contents presented in the course and/or 40% of the group work.
