Fundamentals of drawing

Description:

This course provides a solid foundation in drawing, covering a range of techniques and procedures that span from traditional hand?drawing to more contemporary approaches. The aim is for students to master the fundamentals of artistic drawing —construction, perspective, chiaroscuro, and volumetrics— and to be able to represent movement graphically using effective expressive resources.

Previous Knowledge:

No prior knowledge is required.

Objectives:

The aim of this course is for students to learn to draw from direct observation, developing the ability to represent volume, space, light, and proportions through a range of techniques. The course seeks to ensure that students master the fundamentals of artistic drawing —construction, perspective, chiaroscuro, and volumetrics— and are able to represent movement graphically using effective expressive resources.

Contents:

Topic 1. Geometric Still Life. Study of form and basic construction through observation and pencil drawing of a still life from nature.

Topic 2. Organic Still Life. Study of form and basic construction through observation and pencil drawing of a still life from nature using more complex objects.

Topic 3. Perspective. Study of form, construction, and the use of perspective through observation and pencil drawing of the architecture on the La Salle campus.

Topic 4. Human Figure Construction. Study of form and more advanced construction through observation and charcoal drawing of a human model from life.

Topic 5. Human Figure Lighting. Study of form and volumetric representation in two dimensions of a human model from life through observation and charcoal drawing.

Topic 6. Character. Creation of an anthropomorphic character in pencil using perspective and lighting.

Topic 7. Movement Drawing with Dry Media. Introduction to the study of the human figure in motion with live human models using dry techniques.

Topic 8. Movement Drawing with Wet Media. Expansion of the study of the human figure in motion with live human models using wet techniques.

Topic 9. Movement Drawing with Mixed Media. Deepening the study of movement through the use of various materials and their combination to achieve expressive drawing.

Methodology:

The course will be taught using a range of instructional methodologies. At the beginning of each topic, a lecture will be delivered in which the instructor introduces key concepts and provides the context necessary for the material that will be developed in the following sessions. Afterwards, students will work through a series of experiential and meaningful exercises related to drawing from life and from reference. The combination of both approaches will enable them to progressively acquire the fundamentals of drawing.

MD 0: Lecture supported by audiovisual material.
MD 4: Seminar.
MD 5: Self?Paced Learning.
MD 6: Project?Based Learning.

Evaluation:

Throughout the course, students will complete a range of practical drawing exercises that cover the main areas of artistic representation. They will work on still life sketches to develop direct observation, construction, and an understanding of volume, as well as outdoor perspective drawings that allow them to practice the representation of architectural space and depth.

The course will also include human?figure sketches focused on both construction and the study of lighting from live models, with the aim of understanding structure, proportions, and the behavior of light on the body. In addition, students will work on character design, developing facial expressions, dynamic poses, and the integration of the character into a perspectival environment.

An essential part of the learning process will be the creation of quick sketches of figures in motion, using dry, wet, and mixed media to develop synthesis, expressiveness, and the dynamic representation of the human body. Finally, students will complete a drawing?from?life assignment that integrates figure and environment, putting into practice all the knowledge acquired throughout the course.

Evaluation Criteria:

Evaluation criteria for all assessment periods: If the conditions required to pass the assessment period are not met, the maximum possible grade will be 4. Students have the right to request a grade review on the date established by the instructor. During this review, the student’s grade may be raised or lowered.
