The Urban Project 3 course aims to provide students with historical and cultural knowledge and main references in relation to the development and shape of cities. To acquire the ability to understand and recognize the main traces and typological diversity that make up the city, in order to help them learn to read and understand the urban fabric as that inseparable context that is part of and defines the image of the city.
Regardless of the objective (architecture, public space, planning, infrastructure, etc.), a good project will be one that takes into account the specificity of its own geographical, urban, historical, socio-cultural, political-administrative, etc. context. To be able to intervene on an urban system it is essential to understand its essential components, and to be aware of its complexities and singularities. To address this complexity, the course proposes a thematic reading of its most structural components at different scales (territorial, municipal, neighborhood and human).
Placed after a first and second course, this third course serves to deepen the thematic urban planning of the First Cycle of the Degree. If the first course focuses on the island and the second on the street, this third course focuses on urban fabrics.
Titular Professors
Professors
It’s recommended to have done Urban Planning 1 and 2.
- Understand the content of an urban planning document to identify what building capacity, what uses can be developed, and what formal limits must be respected.
- Understand the possibilities and tools that should allow adjustments or modifications to address certain actions.
- Develop technical projects and carry out the construction management of buildings within the scope of their legal qualifications.
The content of the workshop will combine theoretical sessions, dedicated to specific topics, which will be related to the practical exercises to be developed throughout the course.
The objective of the theoretical sessions is to enrich historical and cultural knowledge and to establish urban planning concepts through references and good practices.
The content of the thematic sessions will be very varied; We will approach from the analysis of the shape of the territory, to the historical conformation of the cities, its different forms of growth both historical and current, we will also analyze and characterize the elements that shape and define the city model and finally we will know the basic notions of urban planning, of urban standards, parameters and urban management, to understand the logic and rules of the game that make possible the development of new growth, improvement and urban transformations. The urban planning is one of the key tools to adapt cities to changing social needs.
The content taught is analyzed and formalized in the practical part where the student faces the development of an urban project. For pedagogical and academic reasons, the practical part is divided into the parts that have been considered appropriate to develop the project according to the selected field of work. These sections refer to “different ways of approaching the project” and, at the same time, represent a look at areas of knowledge and professional specialization that are characterized by their overlapping content, areas of influence and disregard for the scale of work.
In addition to the exercises that will be developed in the course, listed below, it will be considered vital to generate a coherent narrative between the different exercises carried out by the student. This narrative will be formalized with a PowerPoint that will include the key documentation of the previous exercises and other new documentation (graphic or written) that complement the explanation of the proposal and the work carried out.
· EXERCISE 1. UNDERSTANDING THE URBAN SYSTEM AS A WHOLE
· EXERCISE 2. DEEPENING THE KNOWLEDGE AND DEFINITION OF THE URBAN MODEL FOR A FRAGMENT OF THE MUNICIPALITY
· EXERCISE 3. STRATEGIC INTERVENTION IN THE URBAN FRAGMENT STUDIED
The course is a project workshop in which students will have to attend theoretical sessions that will be key for the development of the practical part. The classes are intended to be dynamic with a theoretical and practical part where students can work while reviewing their proposals in class. It is a practical program based on a learning-by-doing methodology. For the course to develop correctly, the involvement of the students is essential.
The workshop is structured in three exercises where the students will be organized in different group configurations, and finally concludes with an exercise to be carried out individually. This progression will allow the students to progressively acquire knowledge and integrate the tools of graphic production, with a more distributed workload in the first stages, allowing for a more fertile evaluation and discussion. In the final exercise, the student will have to conclude the whole process with an intervention proposal that he/she will be able to develop and justify individually from all the work previously done in group.
This work done during the workshop can be completed, corrected or supplemented at home until the next class.
The course proposes an interscalar methodology to provide students with the knowledge, skills and sensitivity to be able to carry out this intervention with appropriate criteria. In this sense, although it may seem that the evaluation of the result of the proposal could be the most important thing when evaluating the student, the whole process will be evaluated in a much more relevant way than the final proposal.
The final grade of the Workshop will depend mainly on the grade obtained in the final delivery, which will contain exercises 1, 2 and 3. This evaluation will be weighted taking into account the proportion of work involved in each exercise, but also its relevance in terms of learning. In addition, the student's attitude in the workshops will also be evaluated. For the evaluation of the exercises will be taken into account the learning outcomes (RA) that they can demonstrate, such as the depth in the analysis of the city, the development of the proposals, the graphic quality, the good structuring of the contents, a certain rigor with the possibilities of intervention in the current context, and at the same time the creativity when proposing different solutions that generate a greater debate on the part of the students as a whole.
Exercise 1: 30%
Submission is compulsory.
Failure to complete it will be considered as Not Presented (NP) in the grade of the course.
Exercise 2: 40%
Submission is compulsory.
Failure to complete it will be considered a Not Presented (NP) in the grade of the course.
Exercise 3: 20%
Submission is compulsory.
Failure to do it will be considered a Not Presented (NP) in the grade of the subject.
Attitude in the workshops: 10%
Participation in the debates that may occur during the workshop sessions will be valued, both in the corrections of own works and in those of other groups.
Written papers about theory: +5% In order to increase the grade, students may submit in the final delivery some summaries written by themselves related to the theoretical sessions, with a weighting of +1% for each written paper and a maximum of +5%.
Conditions:
- Attendance must be a minimum of 80% of the classes (throughout its duration) as a necessary condition to pass the subject in the ordinary call.
- This minimum of 80% of class attendance implies that only 3 sessions can be missed without written justification, or the proportional part in case the student arrives late or leaves before the end of the class.
- Students who repeat a course will not keep the grade from one course to another.
- Failure to submit any of the partial deliveries will be penalized.
- Failure to submit the final delivery will result in the grade of the Workshop (and therefore the course) as NP.
- Repeated non-submission will mean that the student will be graded as NP in the ordinary exam.
- Repeated failure to submit partial, semester and/or final deliveries may result in the student losing the right to the extraordinary exam.
- The delivery of non-original material (copies between students) will be strongly penalized.
- The delivery of material generated directly by an artificial intelligence will be heavily penalized (written or graphic). Therefore, the final use of these tools by students will be considered fraudulent and will involve the application of the La Salle Campus code of conduct.
Extraordinary exam session:
The extraordinary convocation is NOT an extension of the regular calendar.
Students who pass in the ordinary call must express their interest in obtaining a grade before the June evaluation meeting.
The student who has not passed the Workshop in the ordinary call must submit the documentation required for the final delivery (in agreement with the teacher or in full compliance with the “Indicative list of topics to be considered and drawings to be made”) duly completed, revised and updated, as well as a copy of all partial deliveries and pre-deliveries, plus the PowerPoint of the final presentation in order to be evaluated. A tribunal will be formed among the professors of the course to evaluate the work presented and the student's trajectory throughout the course.
In accordance with article 5 of Royal Decree 1125/2003, of September 5, the results obtained by the student in each of the subjects of the curriculum, will be graded according to the following numerical scale from 0 to 10, with the expression of a decimal to which the corresponding qualitative qualification may be added.
0-4.9: Fail (SS) | 5.0-6.9: Pass (AP) | 7.0-8.9: Notable (NT) | 9.0-10: Excellent (SB).
Special grades:
- 0.0, this grade is reserved for cases arising from the application of disciplinary sanctions.
- Not Submitted (NP). This grade will be assigned when a student has not participated in a sufficient number of evaluation activities.
- Honors (MH): students who have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.0, according to the criteria of the professor responsible for the course or the Evaluation Board, may obtain this grade. According to R.D. 1125/2003, the number of honors may not exceed 5% of the number of students enrolled. If the number of students enrolled is less than 20, one honorary registration may be granted.
