Strategic aim:
Urban Project II aims to introduce students to urban planning and urban space design on an intermediate scale, without neglecting considerations on a territorial
scale or more precise definitions on the scale of building and urban development projects. The process takes place in the context of European and Mediterranean culture,
with the priority of the overall vision, the civic dimension of spaces and the ecological footprint of interventions.After a first course on the built space of urban fabrics, “the full”, this second degree course focuses on “the empty”: the street.
Specific aims:
Understand the content of an urban planning document to identify building possibilities, allowable uses, and formal limits to be respected.
Acquire knowledge of the possibilities and tools needed to adjust or modify the approach to specific urban interventions.
Develop technical projects within the framework of legal requirements.
The Urban Project is professionally a whole that, for pedagogical and academic reasons, is divided into different “ways of approaching the project”. The sections are as follows:
URBAN STUDIES (MAPPING): Reading the work area. Identifying, selecting and classifying the natural and urban elements that make up it and their historical evolution. Incorporating this reading on cartographic bases.
URBAN STRUCTURE: Deduction and understanding of urban structures and dynamics, diagnosing their problems and proposing actions.
GENERAL PLANNING: Formalization of the proposed guidelines and fitting of the requested program based on different parameters.
DETAILED PLANNING: Verification at scale of the general planning building and its parameters, detailing its relationships with the existing and proposed environment.
URBAN MANAGEMENT: Verification of existing and proposed floor and roof calculations, as well as an introduction to demolition, construction and development costs.
OPEN SPACE: Design of open space (public and private) in coherence with the general and detailed planning proposal, and with the guidelines at their respective scales.
The course will be developed in practical sessions dedicated to discussing and correcting the exercise that students will develop on the chosen area.
Being a long-term class, a whole morning a week, all work must be developed during the class, and therefore attendance during the 4 hours of the workshop will be essential.
In parallel with each workshop, each teacher will carry out a dynamic theoretical debate. It is expected that the debate topics will be the following, although new ones may arise throughout the course:
Debate 1: Planning. Basic concepts. Parameters
Debate 2: Physical support. Topography, slopes, widths
Debate 3: Urban green network, Heritage and Context
Debate 4: The street
Debate 5: Volumetry and Layouts
Debate 6: Mobility and Urbanization
Debate 7: Urban Management
The final grade for the Workshop will depend primarily on the grade obtained on the final submission, which will include exercises 1, 2, and 3.
This grade will be weighted according to the amount of work involved in each exercise, as well as its relevance to the learning process. In addition, the student's attitude during the workshops will also be assessed.
For the evaluation of the exercises, the learning outcomes (LOs) they demonstrate will be considered, such as in-depth analysis of the city, development of proposals, graphic quality, clear structuring of content, a degree of rigor regarding the possibilities for intervention in the current context, and creativity in proposing alternative solutions that generate further discussion.
In accordance with article 5 of Royal Decree 1125/2003, of September 5, the results obtained by the student in each of the subjects of the curriculum, will be graded according to the following numerical scale from 0 to 10, with the expression of a decimal to which the corresponding qualitative qualification may be added.
0-4.9: Fail (SS) | 5.0-6.9: Pass (AP) | 7.0-8.9: Notable (NT) | 9.0-10: Excellent (SB).
Special grades:
- 0.0, this grade is reserved for cases arising from the application of disciplinary sanctions.
- Not Submitted (NP). This grade will be assigned when a student has not participated in a sufficient number of evaluation activities.
- Honors (MH): students who have obtained a grade equal to or higher than 9.0, according to the criteria of the professor responsible for the course or the Evaluation Board, may obtain this grade. According to R.D. 1125/2003, the number of honors may not exceed 5% of the number of students enrolled. If the number of students enrolled is less than 20, one honorary registration may be granted.
