CONSTRUCTION. Construction I: Introduction to materials and systems

Description: 

1. Subject´s facts:

The course of Construction I is a conceptual and practical immersion in the basic knowledge associated to the practice of construction: matter and materials on one hand, and on the other hand order (structure and comfort envelope systems).

M. Matter and Materials

Knowledge of the matter will be addressed from a general overview. We will study the lifecycle of the materials, its origin and production, as well as its properties and the impact of the choice of each material on the result. It is the only subject of the career in which building materials are studied in a specific way.

S.  Structure and comfort envelope

We will study how these matters are ordered, in the form of materials, to respond to the structural, energetic and comfort demands of the buildings. We will also analyze the external conditions that determine its characteristics, addressing also how they affect the architectural form.

Construction is the instrument with which architecture is expressed.

Objectives: 

Matter and materials

They must be able to recognize which materials have been used in a construction, the reasons they have been chosen for, and what their impact is on the result.

They should also be able to recognize and evaluate the correspondence between the material characteristics and the support and comfort systems used in the building, as well as the environmental impact associated with the materials used.

Structural system

To be able to recognize which structural system has been used in each of the buildings, the strategies to ensure the load bearing capacity and the stability of the structure, as well as to know which the appropriate materials to apply in each structural system are.

Comfort envelope

To be able to recognize, for each one of the analysed buildings, the strategies and technical solutions adopted in order to obtain the required levels of comfort, and which are the appropriate materials to apply. To be able to assess the relationship between the demands of the building and the external conditions and the solutions adopted.

To be able to make suggestions to improve the energy efficiency of a given building.

Theory

Systems and materials In this area, theoretical content of the course is taught. Their format will be lectures, includingdiscussion with students and a previous preparation of its content, mandatory for all students.

Workshops

In this learning area, knowledge acquired in the theory part is applied to specific cases. This is done in various formats.

Part of the work should be done inclass, mainly in decision-making, that must be finished individually.

Class revisions are always public and participatory, so everybody can see all the proposals and can discuss about all of them.

2. EXTRAORDINARY EVALUATION

If ordinary evaluation is failed (average grade below 5 and/or workshops not submitted and/or failing attendance) there is an option to take an extraordinary exam.

To be eligible to take the extraordinary examination, the student must have submitted at least 50% of the practical assignments during the course.

This exam content will be about ALL course (theory and workshops)

Evaluation Criteria: 

-All workshops (W) must have been submitted by the stablished deadline.

-Students must have taken the examination for each semester, obtained a minimum mark of 4 in each examination, and achieved and average mark above 5 across the two examinations.

-Attendance will be assessed based on the submission of workshops. To pass the course, students must have submitted at least 80% of the scheduled workshops. In addition, submission of workshops W.04 and W.05 from Semester 1, as well as W.09 and W.10 from Semester 2, is compulsory.
