Structures 3 deals with the basic criteria for dimensioning and checking building elements made of reinforced concrete and foundations, using the knowledge acquired at Structures 1 and Structures 2.
Titular Professors
For achieving the goals of this subject, the previous knowledge acquired at Structures 1 and Structures 2 is considered highly necessary.
The main goal of the structures’ subjects of the School of Architecture of La Salle is to achieve the perfect knowledge of the structural behavior of architectural works and to be able to set the dimensions and check structural elements. The course will be aimed to the achievement of these objectives, emphasizing the intellectual and creative effort in the design aspect of the structure, in its interrelation with the project as a whole, and in the numerical resolution of the structure.
In summary, at the end of the structural training, it is intended that, in addition to being able to check it, the students must be able to project it, developing with judgment and success the structure understood as consubstantial with the joint project and not disjointed and independent. Above all, they must reach a sufficient degree of training to be able to create suitable structural typological approaches for their architectural projects.

Subject development will be mainly based on exercise solving in class and out of the class. For each topic, teachers will perform a brief lecture intended to introduce the students to the topic so they can practice with exercises in class and between classes. At the next session students will work on more exercises on the topic while doubts will be solved. After some related topics, an exam will be held to let the students and the teachers assess the grade of achievement of the learning outcomes.
Course has two calls: ordinary and extraordinary. An exam of the whole content of the course will be held in the date stablished for each call. During the course, there are two partial exams regarding to the two main topics of the subject. The first one about concrete structures and the second one about geotechnics and foundations.
If the grade of the exam is lower than 5, the grade of the exam will be the course grade. The grade will be rounded to a multiple of 0.1. If the course grade is 5 or more, the student would pass the subject, otherwise the student would fail. It is not allowed to take the extraordinary call exam for the students who already passed the subject in the ordinary call.
If the student justifiably absents him/herself from the exam of the ordinary or the extraordinary call, then he/she will have the option to take an exam that will be held before the assessment board, only for students with justified absences.
The following text is part of La Salle regulations about justified absence in exams:
- When the student cannot take one exam on the stablished day due to justified reasons, he/she should notify it to the teacher (directly or indirectly) the same day of the exam or before. An official certificate clearly stating the reason of the absence should be given to the teacher as soon as possible.
- Possible justified reasons of absence are illness, death, serious family circumstances or accident.
- The following causes are not justifiable reasons to absent from an exam: a trip, work issues, another exam the same day…
Regarding to the classification of academic activities:
- Partial exams during the course are considered highly important academic activities
- Exams of both calls are considered highly important academic activities
The date and content of the exams will be confirm during the course. The scheduled dates are indicated on the teaching plan
