Room Acoustics

Description
In this course explains all basic theory necessary for a whole acoustic design applied to any room or any place is treated. The course is divided in two parts. In the first one acoustic treatment, room acoustic and isolation is explained. Noise control Environmental acoustics and aound reinforcement are treated in the second part. Noise control and environmental acoustics are explained, including laws and international legislation.

Methodology

The course is based on lectures in class. Problems are suggested for students to solve at home and are later discussed in class. The chalkboard lectures are often accompanied with computer projections. During the course, demo sessions and visits to companies in the acoustic industry or concert and opera halls are organized.
Students have to carry out some practical work such as application of the knowledge acquired.

Evaluation

The course grade is calculated at the end of the course as the average of two parts that have to approve separately.

Students must do an assignment, based on research with a practical part based on acoustical simulations or outdoor measurements.

Final evaluation is calculated as:

70% Exam + 30% Continnuous evaluation

Evaluation Criteria

General Knowledge about environmental acoustics
- The student should acquire knowledge about the course..
Application of this knowledge for the profession
- The student should demonstrate ability to make an acoustic evaluation to solve any room acoustic design or
building acoustic problem.
Solve problems
- The student should demonstrate ability to solve problems related to this course.
Skill at acquiring own criterion
- The student should demonstrate ability to judge any acoustic proposal to solve a problem.
Environmental sensitivity
- The student should acquire sensibility towards acoustic pollution and respect to the environment.
Apply the knowledge to a practical assignment.
- The student should demonstrate ability to apply theory to numerical problems, solving real situations and making any
kind of measurement .
Skill at learning
- The student should demonstrate ability to learn, to understand theoretical basis and to apply them correctly. The student should learn to talk in public, practising in oral presentations.
Learn to take own and new design decisions:
- Alumni must solve any noise control problem designing new proposals or adjusting existing ones.
