Be a Contemporary Thinker: An oasis of reflection and freedom to think about today's world.

Reality and nihilism in the contemporary world

Description
Our times are under the sign of nihilism, a “disquieting guest” that, in the words of Friedrich Nietzsche, brings about “the fall of the highest values”, that is, the progressive disintegration of the theoretical and moral structures that have underpinned the life of Western man from the beginning. Initially a marginal phenomenon, highlighted only by a few eccentric figures, nihilism is now, whether we like it or not, the horizon and common denominator of all the phenomena of our culture. Reflection on it is therefore an unavoidable and urgent requirement for philosophical thought, to the extent that, through it, the very conditions of possibility for the survival of the West, of the Western way of understanding the universe and man, are called into question. The figure and work of F.M. Dostoevsky (1821-1881) emerges in this context as a particularly apt witness for an attempt at clarification and diagnosis: a contemporary of the first explicit manifestations of the nihilistic phenomenon, the author was able to identify with exceptional lucidity the transcendence of its implications, often going far beyond, in the depth of his intuitions, the formulations achieved by his own apologists. The whole of his work constitutes, despite its literary and not technically philosophical character - or precisely thanks to this, since the dimension of the problem far exceeds that of mere intellectual controversy - a response of surprising rigor and penetration to the challenge posed and a privileged instrument for reflection.

Objectives

The course aims to provide the student, through the study of some relevant works from the career of F. M. Dostoevsky, with elements for an adequate understanding and evaluation of the phenomenon of nihilism: its causes, its evolution and implications, as well as possible elements of opposition and alternative. In this sense, it will include the philosophical analysis of two crucial novels from the author's production, which will be the subject of a detailed analysis: Notes from Underground (1864) and Crime and Punishment (1866). Starting from the study of the author's confrontation with Russian nihilism and its specificities, an attempt will be made to reach an adequate judgment on the phenomenon as a whole.

Methodology

The teaching methodology that will be used in the teaching of the subject is specified in:

Work in the classroom:

Master classes. Master classes refer to the presentation by the teachers of the theoretical contents of the subject, the orientation of the students on basic and advanced readings, as well as on complementary sources of information and the establishment of guidelines and keys for the completion of theoretical and practical tasks.

Continuous Assessment. Assessment is an integrated part of the teaching-learning process. In this subject, a continuous assessment will be carried out that will combine the delivery and presentation of tasks with the development of objective tests (written) throughout the semester. At the same time, the teachers will give feedback on the progress of the student.

Work or activities outside the classroom:

Independent work of the students. The students' independent work consists, on the one hand, of reading selected texts and creating diagrams, summaries, concept maps, etc. based on them.

Tutorials. All students will have the possibility of requesting individual or group tutorials, by appointment, from the teaching staff. These tutorials may be aimed at resolving doubts about both the content and the preparation of the tasks.

Evaluation

Ordinary session: In order to be assessed in the ordinary session, all the activities subject to assessment must have been completed. The assessable activities must be handed in on the dates indicated by the teaching staff. If an activity subject to assessment has not been handed in or completed, it will be recorded in the minutes as "Not submitted" in the session.

Extraordinary session: The assessment criteria are the same as in the ordinary session, so all the assessment activities considered in the course must be submitted. The grades for the activities completed will be kept, pending the completion of the pending activities. In this evaluation, the same weighting criteria will be applied as in the ordinary evaluation.

Evaluation Criteria

The evaluation will consist mainly of written tests through which the teacher will judge the knowledge acquired by the student, the degree of understanding of the works analyzed, the ability to develop an independent reflection based on them, as well as the quality of expression. The quality of participation in the different sessions will also be assessed.

Midterm test: 40%

Final test: 50%

Participation: 10%

The use of artificial intelligence tools is prohibited in any of the proposed activities, and may lead to direct failure of the subject.
