An introductory course in visual effects for production using Houdini FX. Students will learn to create and control particle simulations (POP), granular simulations (Vellum Grains), rigid body dynamics (RBD), and volume simulations (Pyro/Smoke), integrating them within a professional production pipeline and rendering with Karma/Solaris.
Basic knowledge of 3D
To enable students to design, simulate, and render complex visual effects in Houdini FX, understanding the procedural logic of the software and correctly integrating simulations within a professional VFX production pipeline.
- Advanced particle simulation (POP III) – Magic Paladin
- Vellum Grains – Sand, snow, and soil simulations
- RBD I – Rigid Body Dynamics. Introduction to destruction
- RBD II – Material Fracture and Constraints
- RBD III – Debris Source and Smoke Simulations
Progressive theoretical-practical methodology. Each 4-hour weekly session combines technical demonstration by the instructor (50%) and guided practical exercise in the classroom (50%). Students build effects step by step, replicating the workflow of a professional VFX studio, progressing from foundational concepts to complete setups with final renders.
- Assessable exercises: 70% (minimum grade to average: 3.5/10)
- Continuous assessment: 30%
All exercises must be submitted. The minimum grade to average is 3.5/10;
