The subject Telecommunications Market and Services offers students a global and structured vision of the role played by information and communication technologies in contemporary society, addressing their social impact, their contribution to the transformation of public administrations and their influence on the evolution of urban space. From this broad perspective, the subject places the operation of telecommunications operators in the context of the fourth industrial revolution, analysing the services they provide, the contracting models and the associated economic frameworks. Reflections on technological ethics, strategic innovation and emerging trends are also incorporated, in order to provide a conceptual basis that allows the student to understand the dynamics of the sector and relate it to future developments in the field of telecommunications.

It is necessary to have knowledge of the subjects: Signals and Transmission Systems and Telematics.

Objectives: 

The purpose of the subject is for the student to understand the functioning of the telecommunications market and to know the services offered by operators, as well as the procedures, contracting modalities and associated costs. It also seeks to enable students to develop a critical and multidimensional vision of the role of ICTs in society, analyse their impact on public administrations and the transformation of the urban environment, and reflect on the ethical challenges linked to technological progress. In the same way, it aims for the student to interpret the dynamics of innovation and the changes of recent times, and to be able to relate emerging trends to the future evolution of the telecommunications sector and to their own professional profile.

Methodology: 

The subject operates weekly with 1 teaching session per week. At each session a professional from the sector will come to talk about one of the points of the syllabus and attendance is mandatory.

Evaluation: 

The assessment is based on work on the future of cities.

Evaluation Criteria: 

The following will be assessed:

  • Quality of conceptual analysis, demonstrating understanding of the principles of smart cities and their relationship with services and the telecommunications market.
  • Evaluation of the social and urban impact, assessing in a well-founded way how applied technologies transform public services, urban management and the lives of citizens.
  • Critical integration of ethical, technological and innovation aspects, identifying challenges, opportunities and relevant trends in the evolution of smart cities.
  • Methodological rigor and expository clarity, including coherent structure, adequate use of sources, argumentative quality and correct presentation of the work.
