Procedures for Community Students

Obtaining the Enrollment Certificate

Residents of the city of Barcelona have the obligation to be registered. The register is the municipal registry of the entire population of the city and being registered is a mandatory requirement for access to public services such as health or education. In addition, registration is also a compulsory requirement for certain formalities related to the Aliens Act (family reunification, social rooting, employment status, etc.).

Steps to follow in order to get the register

To be registered as resident in Barcelona, you must make an appointment before going to one of the Citizen Services offices with the necessary documentation.

Required documents:

  • Original passport and one copy or valid Residence card (TIE).
  • Original documents that certifies your residency: house title, rental contract (not older than 5 years and valid for 6 months at least), and one of the last bills (water, gas, electricity) stating the name and the address of the applicant.
  • Contract of rent with a maximum seniority of 5 years, or
  • Last receipt of any supply (water, gas, electricity, etc.) stating the name and address of the person requesting the registration.

In case you are not the owner of the property, to be registered as resident, you will need a signed authorization from the owner and a copy of his/her ID.

Obtaining the Foreigner Identification Number (NIE)

Students, who belong to one of EU country, to one of the country of the European Economic Area or to Switzerland​ and who wish to reside in Spain for more than three months, must apply for Foreigner Identification Number (NIE).

The registration must be submitted in person at immigration office (oficina de extranjería) in the province where the student resides or where he / she wishes to establish his / her address.

Documents required:

  • Application form in duplicate.
  • Valid passport or national identity document (original and photocopy).
  • School certificate: certificate of enrolment in Spanish.
  • National or private health insurance.
  • Proof that you have sufficient financial means for you (and your accompanying family) during the stay in Spain.
