Double Degree in Electronic Systems Engineering in Communications + in Engineering in the Management of ICTs

La Salle Campus Barcelona offers 5 double degrees in the ICT Engineering field. With the double degrees, you can finish the university studies in 5 academic years with two official degree qualifications.

Local Area Networks

Description
This subject introduces students to the networking field. The course focuses on terminology and protocols related to networking and computer networks, specifically related to local area networks. The first part of the course introduces generic concepts about data networks and a deep study is performed about the OSI architecture, and also the TCP/IP architecture. The second part of the course studies advanced concepts related to local area networks and wireless networks. Several lab sessions are included in the course in order to promote the teamwork, help to reach the course objectives and apply them in practice.

Objectives

The graduates of our program get the knowledge to develop the following skills:
1. Basic knowledge on the subject.
2. Identify, analyze and methodologically troubleshoot problems in data networks.
3. Capacity for applying theoretic knowledge in practice.
4. Capacity for designing, installing, organizing and managing telecommunication networks, systems, services and infrastructures
5. Knowledge and use of concepts related to network architectures, protocols and communication interfaces.
6. Knowledge of technologies to interconnect networks and routing concepts.

Learning Outcomes of this subject are:
RA.01 Master the concept of network, its architecture, deployment and services (GT, GC, GK, GS).
RA.02 Differentiate the characteristics, advantages, disadvantages and main applications of circuit and packet switching strategies (GT, GC, GK, GS).

Methodology

The methodology used in this course is mainly based on master theoretical classes. In the lectures the theoretical contents are taught during the course. In these classes, discussions are promoted about specific themes and the problems proposed during the course are solved. Also new exercises are suggested to the students and they can solve them out of the class time. The main goal of these exercises is to reinforce the theoretical concepts in order to apply them in practice. These exercises are partially or totally solved in posterior classes, so the students can check their improvement. There are also some classes dedicated only to work and find the correct answers to proposed exercises where the students are actively involved in the problem’s resolution.
Different labs are performed during the course, where the students apply the knowledge acquired in the lectures. During the classes the teachers promote the teamwork, the critical spirit and the troubleshooting capacity in a methodological way.
The resolution of the student questions is performed by different ways: during the class time, during the tuition time, by email or by forums in eStudy.

Evaluation

The course evaluation is performed with the following methods:
A. Exams
C. Quizzes
J. Classroom participation
L. Laboratory participation

The subject is divided in two semesters and there is an exam for each semester. The final grade is obtained by the arithmetic average between both semesters, only if the student has passed each semester. These exams let the teacher evaluate the written communication and the capacity for analysis and synthesis of the learned knowledge in the networking area. Also the knowledge on the subject and the capacity to apply the knowledge to the proposed exercises are evaluated.

Another important point in the subject evaluation is related to the labs. The grades are rounded up depending on class and laboratory participation. Continuous assessment consists on hands-on activities, exercises, tests, presentations and challenges.
