Objectives

Students will acquire historic-constructive knowledge of the traditional systems, ceilings (ceramics, wood, concrete, aluminous cement, steel) vertical elements and fundamentals as well as heritage restoration criteria.
Creating awareness about protecting heritage values and developing the utilisation of modern constructive processes and materials, compatible with the traditional ones, disseminating and promoting the building heritage nature.

- Establishing protection values for heritage buildings and utilizing effectively modern construction processes and mate-rials so they are compatible with traditional materials and with the heritage nature of the construction.
- Studying the most significant examples of architectonic restoration and the criteria that was applied in each case, all explained directly from the professional that intervened in the restoration works..
- Understand legal and regulatory aspects about interventions on heritage buildings.
- Defining methodology for writing and executing restauration projects based on transdisciplinary teams.
- Acquiring technical knowledge in energy rehabilitation and its impact on heritage values.
- Training professionals in the field of rehabilitation achieving a high level of theory-practical knowledge in conservation materials and elements and constructive systems, all according to heritage values.

Contents

HISTORY OF THE CONSTRUCTIVE TRADITION.
History, analysis and identification of the basic architectonic styles and constructive systems that shape our heritage. From cohesive construction to light construction. Traditional constructive systems (arches, domes, load bearing walls).

INTERVENTION CRITERIA IN HERITAGE BUILDINGS.
This module covers from Laws related to heritage matters till how the new norm/regulatory frame influence the building condition (CTE), also introducing new concepts like energy shortage
The Venice Charter has been a strong reference for defining the intervention criteria. Its evolution has set the path that all European trends have supported (from Ruskin to Viollet-le-Duc, Camillo Boito, DCPAL).
