Objectives

Students who complete our course on Architectural Projects acquire the knowledge and develop the skills listed below:

1. To have a full understanding on the subject based on the knowledge of the conception of shape in the creation of the architectural idea.
2. To design and use systems, components, processes or experiments to achieve the requisites set out in the architectural project.
3. To identify, formulate and solve team co-ordination problems in a pluri-disclipinary environment, on an individual basis or as a member of a team.
4. To fully comprehend the impact of construction on society and the importance of working in a professional and ethical environment.
5. To use the latest techniques and tools available in order to conceive her/his ideas and creations.
6. Effective oral and written communication and the ability to express ideas through models.
7. To understand all the contemporary aspects related to the profession and the need for a continued training.
8. To develop a passion for the profession and to learn how to construct ideas, projects and works.

Contents

The course is made up of the Project and the Project Workshop. In the Project section, the student carries out three exercises, one each term. The first is on the subject of a type of residence and the last on a public building. The second project is carried out together with Urbanism in order to address potential architectural problems before they arise. The difference between the domestic and public building is discussed on the course.

The project of the previous year is elaborated, to the standard of the Final Project, in the workshop course. Teachers from all the departments participate in this course.

Methodology

Given that a student is not taught architecture, but s/he learns it, the course is based on exercises created to practice architecture and carried out in class with the guidance of the tutor. This work is completed with the work done at home.

Lectures, related to problem-solving with emphasis on abstract values, diagrams and models. On-site visits and speeches from highly respected professionals also form part of the course.

The Project work makes up 60% of the final mark and the Workshop the remaining 40%. The Project mark is given to each exercise at the end of each term while the Workshop exercises vary depending on the work being carried out.

Objective 1:
- Through constant work and a need to understand the reasons behind many of the principals involved in project development, the student will develop her/his knowledge of the subject. [D, F, G, J]

Objective 3:
- The problems which arise on the Project are solved with a dedication and a natural ability to use the all the knowledge acquired on previous courses. [D, F, G, J]
