Double degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics and Philosophy

Political and Social Philosophy

Description
This course aims for students to understand the meaning of political and social philosophy, both in its philosophical dimension?focused on the search for concepts and ethical orientation?and in its political and social dimension, attentive to the concrete realities of human life in society. It introduces students to the specific issues of political and social philosophy, some of its fundamental questions and topics, and some of the main lines of thought present within the field.

It has sometimes been said that philosophy is ?the effort of the concept.? Indeed, a characteristic feature of philosophy is its attempt to grasp the fleeting and the concrete within representations that give them stability. In this way, philosophy seeks primarily two things. First, it aims to find meaning where there were previously only disconnected data?something like the multiplicity of intuitions that Kant spoke of; and precisely based on Kant, in the case of politics, philosophy seeks to take the concrete data of political reality?something like raw data?and find concepts with which to consider them, aware that otherwise, they would be like intuitions without concepts, which are blind. Conversely, in political philosophy, the aim is for these concepts to fit what experience shows us as proper to politics, thus avoiding constructions in the air and risking (again inspired by Kant) that concepts without intuitions remain empty.

Second, philosophy does not aim merely to understand or find concepts; it seeks deep understanding. It wants to grasp phenomena from their roots, to develop a representation that fully captures politics and its phenomena, and to understand them from their foundations?based on what accounts for their meaning in the most complete and radical way possible. This, in our view, is what distinguishes political and social philosophy from other disciplines that also, obviously, use concepts but do not seek (nor are they required to) to reach the root. Instead, those disciplines provide a map that allows us to navigate phenomena. In philosophical subjects, the goal is to go further: rather than a superficial map, the aim is to account for all phenomena with the highest ideal of understanding, even while recognizing that this task may never be fully completed and is always threatened by failure.

In this way, this course aims to help students develop sensitivity to concepts and the ability to ask questions that reach for depth. It complements more strictly empirical subjects, contributing to the formation of a professional who is attentive to concrete problems while also maintaining a perspective of depth and totality?a duality necessary to face the great challenges of our time.

Methodology

The course will combine two types of activities aimed at acquiring knowledge and developing competencies among students.

Lecture Sessions: The instructor will provide a series of explanations to present the main theoretical content of the course, including the issues, concepts, positions, and arguments of the authors studied in this subject. Lecture sessions are not incompatible with student participation; students will be prompted to demonstrate their understanding of the topics discussed and to offer reasoned positions on them.

Practical and/or Debate Activities: Each course session will include a segment dedicated exclusively to debate and student reflection. In this segment, students will critically comment on a political issue, identify the underlying philosophical problem, relate it to the authors studied, and provide a reasoned position. These activities may be based on a current news item, a problem statement, or a philosophical text to be commented on, and they will allow students to regularly practice comprehension, analysis, and argumentation skills, which will also be required in other evaluation activities.

Evaluation

To be assessed in the ordinary examination session, all activities subject to evaluation must have been completed. Assessable activities must be submitted on the dates indicated by the instructor. If, for any duly justified reason communicated to the instructor, they could not be submitted within the established period, they may be submitted before the date of the course?s final exam so that the instructor can grade them. In this case, however, the instructor is not obliged to provide feedback on those activities.

Furthermore, students have the right to take the final written exam even if they have not submitted all other assessable activities. However, the final grade for the course will only be calculated if all activities have been submitted, according to the evaluation criteria and weightings established in this syllabus. If any assessable activity has not been submitted or completed, it will be recorded on the grade report as ?Not Submitted.?

Extraordinary Examination Session

The evaluation criteria are the same as in the ordinary session, meaning that all assessable activities required in the course must be submitted. Grades for completed activities will be retained until pending activities are completed. The same weighting criteria as in the ordinary assessment will apply.

Warning Regarding the Use of AI Tools

If AI tools are used in any activity, a paragraph must be included specifying how AI was used and what prompts or instructions were employed to obtain the results. Failure to do so constitutes a violation of academic honesty policies.

Written Test on the Mandatory Reading for the Course: 30%
Personal Reflective Essay: 15%
Final Content Test: 40%
