The 5th edition of Òh!pera, Newly Created Micro-Operas is here, a performance and meeting point for contemporary opera, dramaturgy, and emerging talent. This year, students from the Bachelor in Digital Arts at La Salle-URL are part of the creative team behind Jo, núvol, one of the micro-operas premiering at Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació de Barcelona from 2 to 5 July. Òh!pera is a pioneering project committed to innovative formats, combining experimentation, interdisciplinarity, and creative risk to give voice to new talents and new artistic languages.

Under the guidance of Àlex Ollé, the project is based on the creation of short operas that, despite their condensed format, preserve the essence of the genre: the fusion of music, dramaturgy, and stage direction. Over four evenings, at Fabra i Coats: Fàbrica de Creació and Espai Bota, three short operas will be performed, conceived by emerging composers with promising careers and librettists connected to today’s theatre scene. For many of these creators, this is their first venture into the operatic genre, bringing a fresh, bold, and distinctive perspective to the works. In addition, all the micro-operas feature the active participation of students from various design schools and universities in Barcelona, including La Salle-URL, who are responsible for the set and costume design of the different productions.

This year’s edition presents three new works: Jo, núvol, with a libretto by Alicia Kopf, music by Sergi Puig, and stage direction by Lucia del Greco; La vida por los cuernos, with a libretto by Pablo Macho Otero, music by Anna Colom, and stage direction by Alexandre Rodríguez i Fons; and Opereta, with a libretto by Pol Guasch, music by Arnau Brichs, and stage direction by Marc Salicrú.

Òh!pera, Newly Created Micro-Operas is a production of the Barcelona City Council’s Department of Culture and Creative Industries, through Disseny Hub Barcelona and the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and is held within the framework of the Grec Festival de Barcelona. Performance schedules and ticket purchases are available through the Liceu website.
