Evaluation

Continuous Assessment
REQUIREMENTS, EXPECTATIONS, AND ASSESSMENT

Students will be asked to:

- Speak Spanish, Chinese or German:
This is a language class and the best way to learn a new language is to use it. Students are expected to use Spanish, Chinese or German in class when communicating with the professor and with other students.

- Attend class:
It is very important that you come to class. In-class activities and oral exercises are crucial to be able to understand and pass the subject. If, for some reason, you miss any of the sessions, please contact your professor to justify your absence.

If students miss more than 3 classes, they will be asked to do some extra exercises to make up for the sessions they haven´t been to. If students miss more than 20% of the course, they will automatically fail and will have to do the retake exam.

- Be punctual:
It is very important that you be punctual. If you arrive more than 5 minutes late, you may not be allowed to enter the class.

- Be prepared:
Students will be asked to buy one book for this course. You are required to bring it to class, because many of the activities that we´ll be doing are in this book. No photocopies will be made for students who don´t have the books.

- Participate:
A student´s motivation and participation are the most important part of this course. You are expected to interact with other students and participate in class as much as possible. If all students participate, the class will be more interesting and enriching.

- Meet deadlines:
If students hand in late any of the exercises or assignments, they will receive 0 points. You won´t be able to pass the course if you haven´t submitted all exercises and assignments.

- Cell phones and laptops:
You may not use your cell phones in class. If you do you may be asked to leave the class or be marked absent for that day. If for some special reason you need to use your phone, please talk to the professor in advance.

Laptops will only be used with the professor´s permission for a class-related purpose.

EXAMS AND EVALUATION

Exams are scheduled on specific dates. Students can reschedule exams ONLY with Officially documented medical excuse. May sure you know when your exams are scheduled before you make plane reservations.

The course grade will be based on the following point breakdown:

40% Quality class participation (Quality here means to actually participate in class activities. Simply being in class is not sufficient.)
10% Assignments and oral presentations
10% In and out of class exercises and activities
20% Mid-term exam
20% Final exam

Students will automatically fail if they miss more than 20% of the classes or if they don´t submit all of the required exercises and assignments. A fail grade will also be given for any type of academic dishonesty (cheating, copying, unreferenced work, plagiarism, etc.) on any of the course work or exams. You need to pass the Mid-term and Final or Retake exams and turn in all required coursework in order to pass the course.

Exam review:
Once the semester is over and the final grades are posted, a date will be scheduled for exam review.

Retake exam:
The Retake exam consists of a written/Oral exam and some extra exercises and activities to be submitted. A student cannot take the Retake if all the coursework and assignments due throughout the semester have not been handed in by the date the Retake is scheduled.
