Human Rights Day - Dignity, Freedom and Justice

75 Years Fighting Discrimination: Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Share:

Adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948, it is a date that invites us to reflect on the progress made in protecting and promoting the fundamental rights of all people, as well as to remember the challenges that still persist around the world.

Challenges that test dedication to fundamental human rights principles and citizen collaboration around the world.

We must stand firm in the face of rising intolerance and build a future of dignity, security, justice and human rights for all."

- António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

Freedom, equality and justice for all - theme 2023

This year marks the anniversary of one of the world's most revolutionary commitments: the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR).

In the decades since its adoption, human rights have become more widely recognized and guaranteed around the world. The declaration has served as the basis for an expanding system of human rights protection that today also focuses on vulnerable groups such as persons with disabilities, indigenous peoples and migrants.

Global challenges, such as pandemics, conflicts, growing inequalities, the moral bankruptcy of the global financial system, racism and climate change, have tested the international community's ability to protect human rights."

- António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations

In this context, the 75th Anniversary of Human Rights campaign aims to refocus our work and actions towards greater awareness of the universality of the Declaration and the activism associated with it.

A commitment for all

The defense of human rights is a challenge for everyone, regardless of age, gender, social or economic status. We all have a responsibility to work for the fulfillment of these rights around the world.

On Human Rights Day, I renew my commitment to the defense of these fundamental rights.
