Dr Francesc Miralles, professor, researcher and Commissioner for Planning, Innovation and Strategic Development at La Salle-URL, has been admitted as a Numerary Member of the Royal European Academy of Doctors (RAED). During the ceremony, held at the headquarters of Foment del Treball in Barcelona, he presented the lecture Advancing the understanding of major challenges and the SDGs. A perspective for the social sciences with Böhm, Chalmers and Lakatos. The response to the lecture was delivered by Dr José Daniel Barquero Cabrero, Numerary Member of the RAED.
In his speech, Dr Miralles addressed the role of the social sciences in understanding the major global challenges identified by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as climate change, the eradication of poverty, migration flows, hunger, water scarcity and the gender gap. The lecture highlighted the need to renew traditional scientific approaches in order to also incorporate dimensions such as people’s perceptions, values and emotions. “Understanding the major challenges of our time requires broadening the perspective of the social sciences and integrating new approaches that take into account not only data, but also people’s experiences and values”, he stated during his address. The proposal explores new theoretical perspectives for analysing these challenges, incorporating contributions from quantum theory and studies of consciousness, drawing on the work of authors such as David Böhm, David Chalmers and Imre Lakatos.
Dr Miralles’ admission to the Royal European Academy of Doctors recognises an academic career linked to research excellence and talent development, as well as to reflection on major social challenges from a humanistic and interdisciplinary perspective. This recognition aligns with La Salle-URL’s commitment to innovation, sustainability and the generation of knowledge with impact, reinforcing its vocation to contribute actively to academic debate and to the progress of society.
