On the 1st of March, starting at 12:00p.m., the PhD student Josep Suñol Capella thesis defense will take place at Sala de Graus of La Salle Barcelona - Universitat Ramon Llull. Entitled "The origin of data networks: how Telefónica created the world's first commercial packet-switched data network", the theis has been carried out under the direction of Dr. Francesc Miralles Torner and Dr. Andreu Veà Baró. The doctoral student is part of the SmartSociety group.

How Telefónica was able to assimilate a technological disruption into a competitive advantage that provided it with a leading position in data Communications. It is considered, when, who and how the decision was made to bet on the transmission of data by switching packets, becoming the world's first operator, commercially offering this service to its customers, without leaving the other circuit switching data transmission services as the rest of the operators were offering.

The court is made up of the president, Dr. Luis Arroyo Galán; the secretary, Dra. Guiomar Corral Torruella; and the member, Dr. Antoni Elias Fusté.
