What puts democracy at risk? And what can we do to preserve the freedom that makes it possible?
On 10 November, La Salle - Universitat Ramon Llull will host the presentation of La democràcia en perill, the new book by Jordi Feixas i Roigé, a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy. The author will be joined in conversation by Gregorio Luri, who wrote the foreword, to discuss the current challenges facing democracy and the conditions needed to preserve freedom in contemporary societies.
Drawing on the thought of Alexis de Tocqueville, Feixas examines the risks threatening our political way of life, including the concentration of power, dependence on the state, individual isolation, conformity and the weakening of the bonds that sustain life in common. Rather than offering a nostalgic defence of the past or an abstract critique of democracy, the book revisits Tocqueville’s insights to explore questions that remain highly relevant today: what does it mean to be free in an egalitarian society? What role do family, associations, the press and the judiciary play in preserving freedom? And what happens when citizens stop engaging in public affairs?
La democràcia en perill invites readers to examine a political way of life with depth and critical insight. Democracy can never be taken for granted; it depends on citizens who are able to think, associate and govern themselves.
