As part of the Barcelona International Youth Science Challenge (BIYSC), the international science and technology programme organised annually by Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, La Salle-URL coordinated the workshop Acoustic Engineering at La Pedrera: from Field-Lab to Immersive Experiences.
From 8 to 16 July, pre-university students from around the world explored the intersection of engineering, architecture and sound through a workshop coordinated and delivered by La Salle-URL faculty and researchers. The programme took place across the spaces of La Pedrera and the Interactive Arts & Science Laboratory (IASlab), the campus' pioneering laboratory for transdisciplinary research and artistic creation.
Throughout the sessions, participants studied the principles of acoustics and audio signals, putting this knowledge into practice by measuring and recording how sound travels through different spaces. The workshop enabled students to experiment with sound, music, architecture and immersive audiovisual technologies to understand how design shapes perception and which room at La Pedrera offers the best acoustic performance.
Designed by researchers from the Human Environment Research (HER) research group, the programme combines rigorous acoustic engineering with one of Barcelona's most iconic heritage landmarks, offering a practical, transdisciplinary learning experience that introduces students to research methodologies in engineering and architecture.
The workshop further strengthens the collaboration between Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera and La Salle-URL in developing international initiatives that bring together research, education and cultural heritage, providing students with a transformative learning experience based on experimentation, innovation and dialogue across disciplines.
