LA SALLE-URL WILL BE TAKING PART IN THE CITY AND SCIENCE BIENNIAL WITH TWO ACTIVITIES

From 7 to 11 February, Barcelona City Council will be holding the Ciutat i Ciència Biennial [City and Science Biennial], a forum for reflection on bringing science to the public that includes 138 participants and 96 activities across 72 spaces around the city.

La Salle-URL will be taking part in this Biennial with two activities on Saturday 9 February. Between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., at La Pedrera, the workshop “Supporting humans, social welfare robotics” will be held, where you will get to see in person how pet robots like Pleo can be used in social interaction, and discuss the implications that the use of robots might have in the health sector: How can they help us? How do these other types of robots or technologies differ? What ethical issues do these technologies raise for us? Participants will be able to play with the robots, see how they work, and how they can be applied in a specific project designed for the Robots4Health initiative at Sant Joan de Déu Children's Hospital.

The other activity involves the performing arts. "Serendipity" is a journey through neuro-inspiration and creativity that will take place on Saturday 9 February at the Palau de la Música at 6.30 p.m. Serendipity is a subtle combination of chance and determination that something will happen. In science, two ideas meet by chance and their fusion brings something into existence that did not exist before. Neurobiology is a source of inspiration for art and technology. In this journey through neurology and creativity, we will talk about and experiment with neuro-inspired systems, and we will discuss the mysterious biological reasons behind art. Synaesthetic systems will be presented, such as Musical Vision, a technology that generates music from images, or Colored Music, which gives sounds colours. Participants will delve into the intricate secrets of the brain through images and mini science lessons through a magical spectacle of light and sound. Researchers from the La Salle-URL Media Technologies Research Group will take part and young musicians from the Higher Music School of Catalonia (ESMUC) will perform pieces composed by students or graduates from the school, together with pieces by international authors. A concert that aims to be cross-disciplinary and experimental, and which will bring together classical standards with newer forms of creation and interpretation.
