John D. McCalpin workshop

A Non-Traditional Career in Computer Performance and Architecture
Date
Thursday, 17 October, 2024 - 14:00
Location
Sala de Graus

The campus hosts the workshop of John D. McCaplin (Dr Brandwidth), a world reference in computing and specifically in computer architecture, on Thursday, October 17 at 2 p.m. at Sala de Graus.

McCalpin will give a seminar based on his career path:  a career path starting in physics and analog electronics, shifting to physical oceanography, then to computer performance analysis and then to computer architecture. Yet each of those steps either made sense or seemed unavoidable at the time.  This talk presents some lessons learned over a 40+ year career in academia and industry grappling with the challenges of continuing to advance computer technology.  The lessons include some issues in “technology”, but many issues in “humanity”: about understanding yourself, your colleagues, your management, your organization, and the often-unexpected ways in which these interact.

John McCalpin joined TACC in 2009 as a Research Scientist in the High-Performance Computing Group. His industrial experience includes 3 years at SGI, 6 years at IBM, and 3 years at AMD. Prior to his industrial career, John was an oceanographer, spending six years as an assistant professor at the University of Delaware engaged in research and teaching on numerical simulation of the large-scale circulation of the oceans.

The workshop is organized by the La Salle Digital Engineering School (ETSELS) and is open to the entire La Salle Campus Barcelona and Universitat Ramon Llull community.
