Description
In this course students will learn how to manage digital media in order to produce 2D graphic content. The main goal is to establish the basic knowledge so they will be able to express themselves through it.

Objectives

The student knows how to interpret the volume in 2D and 3D through the anatomical knowledge.
The student knows and applies the basic concepts of graphic design and composition.
The student is able to create graphic compositions using digital tools.
The student is able to create original graphic designs using digital tools.

Contents

1.- Introduction to Photoshop. Black and white landscapes.
- Elaboration of simple landscapes in black and white. 2 copies + 2 own
- Tools: lasso tool, gradient tool, airbrush, layers
- Concepts: depth (superposition of elements + values), and composition.

2.- Colour landscapes
- Copy a classic masterpiece (romanticism landscapers)
- Copy a keyframe from an animated movie.
- Reinterpret the two landscapes with impressionist and abstract style (Kandisky, Mondrian)
- Tools: ‘traditional’ brushes - Brush + mixer brush - Pen tool (Illustrator)
- Concepts: Reinterpretation of images through different styles. Synthesis of figurative elements to simple shapes and primary colours.

3.- Self Portrait I
- Self-portrait imitating traditional techniques:
- Black and white (graphite and charcoal) Ramon Casas
- Colour - Self-portrait imitating the style of Zorn / Sargent / Velázquez

4.- Self Portrait II
- Reinterpret the self-portrait with impressionism or surrealism style.

5.- Creation of a character I
- Creation of a character based on the combination of different cultures and times.
- Reference search (pureref)
- Character sketches with attitude

6.- Creation of a character II
- Choose one of the sketches and detail it. Flat colour + flat shadows (multiply mode)
- Make 1 Cartoon version and a Chibi version

7.- Sequential art
- Explain a brief history using a minimum of 3 bullets.

8.- Creation of a mythological creature I
- Creation of a quadruped mythological creature.
- Collection of cultural and animal references
- Initial sketches

9.- Creation of a mythological creature II
- Choose one of the sketches and detail it. Flat colour + flat shadows.
- Make 1 Cartoon version and a Chibi version

10,11,12.- Creation of a cover for a novel or comic
- Creation of a cover for a novel or comic book including the title and graphic elements.
- Indesign layout of the roof.
- Illustration in Photoshop
- Indesign basic layout.

Methodology

Basically, two teaching methodologies will be used for the development of the subject. At the beginning of each unit there will be a master class followed by a practical application in order to assimilate in an efficient way the knowledge acquired. An individual small project will be done to show all the learned concepts until then.
MD1: Master Class with the support of audiovisual material.
MD2: Exercises and problems classes.
MD3: Project-based learning

Evaluation

Standard evaluation:

- Delivery of the exercises: 90%
The students had to pass at least a 80% of the delivered exercises in order to have a grade point average.

- Continuous evaluation: 10%
Involvement of the student in the classes, delivery of the exercises and criteria of teacher.

- Special evaluation:
In case standard evaluation is failed, students have the option to pass the subject by passing a special evaluation exam.

- Criteria for standard and special evaluation:
Copy or plagiarism of any of the exercises will suppose an immediate failing grade.
