The Signal Processing Section is established in the eighties, being expanded during the nineties. The section embraces four specific areas: Signal Processing in Telecommunications, Computer Vision, Speech Technologies and e-Learning.

Nowadays, the technological development has allowed improvements in fields like telecommunications, computer vision and speech technologies. A fast development of the world of telecommunications has been obtained in the field of signal processing due to the robustness of the systems of low power level and an increase of the bandwidth, allowing the popularization of the solutions contributed by telecommunications to everybody at low cost. In the scope of image processing, the successful launching of systems of artificial vision to help in monotonous tasks or high risk tasks has allowed to incorporate in our environment trustworthy elements. The synthesis and the speech recognition are being introduced with great acceptance in some human-machine interaction systems. The Digital Signal Processing is an extensive scope, being in a first plane of technological development nowadays. The e-learning area works in the investigation of new methods that successfully help to transmit to the students the knowledge corresponding to the subjects framed in the section, with the application of new technologies.

The objective of the Section is to obtain a leader level in the sector areas to consolidate the existent collaborations and to start new ones. The continuous training of the Section members and young people incorporations permit to grow towards this objective.
