The students have the opportunity to build a scale model of a building structure. They will have to design and assemble their own structural project and make it bear some weight proves. This workshop is a reflection on the design process of a structural project. The project’s definition incorporates different disciplines: the shape has a part of geometry; the resistance is determinate for the material’s physics and, the design for an aesthetic and functional component. This helps students to realize about the diversity of disciplines that make of the architecture a complete professional practice.
The teacher will introduce the components that incorporate the building process. The parameters related to geometric, physics and construction contents are the most important issues for this workshop. The material’s components behavior will be explained such as the geometry that defines an architecture structure and the technologies that make this kind of things possible.
Some examples of singular architectures where the structure is an outstanding element of the formal definition of the building will be shown. Explanations are complemented with images and didactic videos.
Students will develop a scale model with different materials. They must be able to create special structures that define a building’s form. The pieces to construct the structure may be sheets, blocks, rigid bars or cords. The necessary materials will be given to the groups to build their models.
To prove the validity of the proposals, some load proves will be done in order to check if the models are resistant to the weight.
This proves shall generate a debate between students and the professor about the possibilities of each technique and the capacities of each construction material.
